Military Sentenced After Tragic Incident in Nuevo Laredo

The Office in Mexico of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights welcomed the resolution issued by the federal court in Tamaulipas that sentenced four military personnel to prison for their alleged involvement in the murder of 5 young people. In an interview for 'Aristegui en Vivo', the president of the Human Rights Committee of Nuevo Laredo, Raymundo Ramos, detailed the case in which he incriminates the sentenced military personnel, accusing them of criminalizing the victims without basis.

"The excessive and arbitrary use of force is unacceptable and must always be prevented, investigated, and punished," emphasized the UN-DH through social media. The courage of the victims' families in their quest for justice was recognized, as well as the work of the organizations that support them. The efforts of the authorities who made this sentence possible were also highlighted.

The incident took place on February 26, 2023, when a group of young people gathered at a nightclub in Nuevo Laredo to celebrate the news that one of them would become a father. Upon leaving the venue, they were chased by a group of military personnel without prior warning, as Raymundo Ramos recounted in the aforementioned interview. The young people tried to flee upon realizing they were being followed, but the military caught up to them, collided with and dragged their vehicle, and then opened fire mercilessly, taking the lives of several young people on the spot.

Only two young men, Alejandro and Luis Gerardo, managed to survive, although they claimed to have been subjected to torture and threats by the military. Despite four military personnel being prosecuted and sentenced, Ramos pointed out that a total of 17 soldiers were involved in this heinous crime.
